Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the two real crises in the Maldives are, land grab and extremism.
He said this while speaking on the Maldives Crisis at the ‘The Huddle’ organized by Indian newspaper, The Hindu.
He said that the two real crises in the Maldives are land grab and state within the state of Maldives by the ISIS.
Noting that land grabs are ‘occurring worldwide’, Nasheed emphasized that it is more common ‘where protection of human rights is poor’.
“The weapons in the new colonial arsenal are bribery, corruption and dubious investments,” added Nasheed.
While the political turmoil in the Maldives continues to intensify day by day since the Supreme Court ruling releasing political prisoners, with a state of emergency declared five days later on 5th February, the former President said that what is happening in Maldives ‘is not about just about democracy; it is about peace, stability and security of the entire neighbourhood’.
Nasheed arrived in Bengaluru, India on Thursday, and met with Maldivian living there the next day.
Sentenced to prison for 13 years over terror charges, Nasheed is currently living in exile in the United Kingdom.
