US Ambassador to the Maldives and Sri Lanka had only one word to describe the incredulousness of the Criminal Court’s decision to summon Maamigili Constituecny MP Qasim to Court, while he was in ICU – ‘Really?!’
The Ambassador, Atul Keshap, made his sentiments known in a simple tweet, quoting Qaism’s lawyer, Hisaan Hussain’s tweet on the same matter.
MP Qasim was issued summons to attend session at Criminal Court at 8 pm on Sunday night. The hearing was cancelled.
Prior to the summons, the lawyers had informed Court that MP Qasim was in Intensive Care Unit. He was admitted at around 9am, for treatment for his worsening medical conditions.
The hearings were initially scheduled for 10.30am but was cancelled as MP Qasim was admitted in ADK. A subsequent hearing was set for 6.00om but was cancelled.
The summons sent to the Parliamentarian on Sunday evening said if he had failed to attend the hearings the case will be heard in absentia.
The Parliamentarian was on trial for attempted bribery of his fellow Parliamentarians.
