The three pairs of Maldivian team have claimed bronze in the Mauritius Badminton Series, having contented in the semis.
This is the first time a local side had claimed bronze and played in the semis of a Badminton World Federation Match.
The pair of siblings Fathimath Nabaha and Aminath Nabeeha were defeated by German pair Lisa Kaminski and Hannah Pohl by 21-10, 21-9. The German pair are ranked 81 globally.
Pair of Maisa Fathuhullah and Nafha Nisrullah were defeated by India’s Prajakta Sawant and Sanjoitha by 21-1, 21-5. The Indian pair is ranked 91.
In the mixed doubles, Zayan Zaki and Nabaha’s pair were defeated by Malaysia’s Yogendra Krishnan and India’s Prajakta Sawant. The locals were defeated by 21-6, 21-4.
Badminton Association of the Maldives says this was an impressive feat for the team, adding that this was a boost towards the goal to achieving a gold in 2019’s Indian Ocean Island Games.
