Postponed indefinitely

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has passed to postpone the planned Congress.

The Congress, which was slated for September, was postponed indefinitely.

The decision was taken in the Congress session held on Thursday night. The motion was put forward by MDP Deputy Leader Mohamed Shifaz and voted for by 28 members.

Speakers in the meeting for the motion had levelled severe criticism of the Elections Commission.

The Party said the Congress was postponed as the Commission had failed to hand over the funds to the Party as mandated by law. MDP is to open a fund to facilitate the Congress, adding that the Congress will be held as soon as the funds are accumulated.

Chairperson Hassan Latheef said they had explored all options to hold the Congress, including analysing the bylaws which was undertaken by the legal committee. Hassan Latheef added that a budget of MVR 2.83 million was required for the Congress.

Congressmen, invitees, observers and media personnel make up the 1123 people that will be taking part in the Congress.
